The candidates for House District 100 are urging state leaders to develop alternative fuels. Running for the position are incumbent Rep. Mike Thompson, R-Oklahoma City, and Democrat James Baggett of Oklahoma City. The district has 7,472 Democrats, 10,760 Republicans and 2,771 independents
The Republican
Thompson said energy is going to be a key component to Oklahoma’s growth in the next five years.
"We have to be the leaders in the development of other types of fuels,” he said. Thompson, 31, also would like lawmakers to provide incentives for the state’s fleet to use compressed natural gas. "I would also like to work with schools to see if they could save them money from the cost of diesel,” he said.
The Democrat
Baggett said he wants Oklahoma to develop an energy usage plan.
"What are we going to do tomorrow if we have 70 percent of our fuel cut off?” he asked. "We need a plan to show how we can start reducing our dependency on oil.”
Baggett, 67, secretary of the Oklahoma County Democratic Party, said the focus of his campaign is to return state government to the control of the people.
