11 arrested in Oklahoma drug sweep
2008-10-19

FREDERICK, Okla. - At least 11 people have been arrested in southwestern Oklahoma as part of a major drug sweep, authorities said.

Eight people who were charged Friday with distributing crack cocaine and marijuana were picked up Saturday morning, Tillman County Sheriff Bobby Whittington said.

Two others were arrested for outstanding misdemeanor warrants during the raid conducted by 21 officers, including sheriff's deputies, police in Grandfield and Tipton and agents from a local drug task force and the Oklahoma Bureau of Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs, Whittington said.

Officers recovered a 9 mm handgun from one of the 12 homes raided. A small amount of marijuana, but no drugs or paraphernalia were found at the other homes, Whittington said.

"We didn't go in on search warrants because we wanted to maintain the confidentiality of our informants," he said. "This time we just went in there and made some buys over a period of time and obtained arrest warrants for them."

An outstanding arrest warrant remains on a ninth person who was not arrested Saturday.

"We're coming after the druggies, (and) if you're going to be dealing dope in Tillman County, we will be coming after you," Whittington said.
