"She told me she was no longer going to stay in business and needed a job,” said Ellis, who owns and operates a weekly newspaper in McCurtain County. "That’s how that came about.”
During the 2006 Legislative session, Sen. Kenneth Corn, D-Poteau, proposed a bill that would do away with appointed tag agents. The bill didn’t get a hearing and died.
Corn says he still supports supervision over the tag agent industry.
"I think the time has come where people who are experienced in dealing with the tax commission do these jobs instead of someone who is politically connected to a senator,” Corn said.
"As a state senator, it’s really a headache. What ends up happening is that a lot of people want the job. One person gets it, and everybody else is mad.”
