"The community is going to suffer,” Wolff said. "But I’m not going to jeopardize my time with my family and my life to work for them. Not if I think funding is going to be cut.”

Training, fees increase In the past year, the volunteer department improved its equipment and increased training.

At the same time, the department increased its fire protection contracts to $100 per land owner from $12.50 per owner, Wolff said. The $100 contract will cover up to 160 acres. People with more land must purchase additional contracts, Wolff said.

This move angered some residents, but 102 of the roughly 225 homeowners paid their dues.

The department has also gotten donations from the Sac and Fox Nation to pay for fire protection for tribal members.

But until the dispute is resolved, the fate of the money is unknown.

"I just feel sick about this,” Sporleder said. "But I just want board members who will do what the law says.”
