"When the government takes full control of an industry and nationalizes it, that’s socialism,” Gaddie said. "We’re not there yet.”

Gaddie said there also is a critical difference between the Boston Tea Party and the modern movement.

"Those guys (the colonists) took their lives in their hands,” Gaddie said. "They were protesting taxation without representation. These folks are protesting taxation with representation. Like it or not, that’s representative democracy.”

Judy Ensz, who drove from her home in Newcastle for Saturday’s protest, said the movement isn’t aimed at any particular party — both Republicans and Democrats need to do a better job.

"We are Americans who want to be heard,” Ensz said. "The politicians don’t listen. They are elected to represent us. They should listen to the people.”
