CLEO SPRINGS -- Firefighters in Woods County have gotten a handle on a massive wildfire that has burned since March 29, mostly in Woods County but in parts of southern Major County too, authorities said.

The fire is still smoldering about six miles west of Cleo Springs in an area five miles long and four miles wide, Cleo Springs Fire Chief Allen Cox said. Cox said the wildfire was caused by a controlled burn getting out of hand.

A house was damaged by the fire Saturday but no one has been injured.

Tuesday and early today, firefighters spent 14 hours fighting it with county road-graders, bulldozers and brush pumper trucks.

"It could have threatened homes last night," Cox said.

By 4:30 a.m. today, "It was pretty well contained," Cox said.

High winds have fueled the fire and spread it both north and south, depending on wind directions. Today is calm and wind is not a factor so firefighters are continuing to monitor any hot spots that might flare up, Cox said.
