AFTON — A Tulsa man died when he was thrown from his sport utility vehicle after it slid on an icy highway and into the path of a tractor-trailer about 3:30 p.m. Monday, the Oklahoma Highway Patrol reported.

Renard J. Johnson Jr., 21, was pronounced dead at the scene, troopers said.

Johnson was driving west on the Will Rogers Turnpike, one mile north of Afton in Ottawa County, when his vehicle slid on the icy road and into the path of a westbound tractor-trailer.

The SUV was struck on the passenger side, ejecting Johnson through the driver’s side window, according to a patrol report.

He was not wearing a seat belt.

The driver of the tractor-trailer, Robert S. Brown, 61, of Springfield, Mo., refused treatment at the scene.
