I never met Edna Scott, THE Edna of Edna’s on Classen Circle. But I knew of her bar, I knew of the joy she brought to thousands of folks who have visited her bar over the year. As interns did their stints at The Oklahoman, as college graduates got their start in our newsroom, one constant this past dozen years was the right of passage that took place at Edna’s. I’ve said repeatedly, it’s not really the skyscrapers and downtown revival that has made Oklahoma City tick in a way it hasn’t in decades. We have a community again. We have a shared history. We have a shared culture. People of many backgrounds, of many talents, of many occupations, have become leaders in crafting the new Oklahoma City.
Edna was clearly one of those folks. News came out on Thursday that Edna, sadly, will no longer be hopping up on the bar top whenever “Great Balls of Fire” started playing. She died of lung cancer.
The music will continue to play.
And the beat goes on.
Live chat follows the normal routine today. Folks can start posting comments and questions at 10 a.m., the conversation will begin at 10:30 a.m.
