A Less Expensive Solution

As I reported this weekend, the Oklahoma City Council on Tuesday will be asked to restore $30 million to the budget for the MAPS 3 convention center that was taken out when the project was located on the site of the former Fred Jones Ford dealership instead of where an OG&E substation is currently situated immediately east of the future MAPS 3 Core to Shore park.
It’s easy to see why Mayor Mick Cornett championed this site for years before it was declined by the MAPS 3 citizens’ oversight board in favor of the dealership property. It is an eyesore. But would $30 million have even been enough to buy the property and pay for the substation’s relocation? We don’t know for sure, though sources have told me the site was potentially going to be far more expensive than expected.
Even during that debate, there were those who suggested a much cheaper solution to the substation – creating a screening that could actually turn it into an asset for the area.
