NewsOK: Oklahoma City News, Sports, Weather & Entertainment

From experts to newcomers, there's something for all football fans on NewsOK

I’m a sports fan. I read all our sports stories. The Oklahoman's sports coverage team does a great job.

I read everything I can. I watch all the Press Row videos from our studios. I listen to the roundtable discussions and the podcasts produced by that award-winning group.

Because I’m interested in sports, I also will listen to sports radio on my commute home in the evening.

(For the record, Berry Tramel is entertaining on the radio, but there’s much more of that entertainment and insight in the pages of The Oklahoman and NewsOK.com. He doesn’t have to share time when he’s writing his columns.)

On Thursday afternoon, however, I spent my commute listening to someone who is not a nationally known sports expert.

Juliana Keeping spoke through my car speakers through the Writer’s Room Podcast, detailing her experiences in covering the centerpiece story in the newspaper that day. She wrote an outsider’s perspective on our state’s love for football. I listened to it on The Oklahoman Radio app on my phone.

That was a fun listen. Juliana is no expert on football, but she is an expert on storytelling. The fact that she was telling a story about football was plenty enough to entertain me.

The podcast was part of Juliana's story that appeared in The Oklahoman on Sunday, titled "Why Football is a Big Deal in Oklahoma."

And with that story, it's officially football season in Oklahoma.

Speaking of football, the football experts within our sports department are geared up this week to do what they do.

Here’s a quick reminder of what they do:

  • Weekly picks contest for high school football, college football and the NFL. Sign up to play now.
  • Live updates during the high school football game nights and during the OU and OSU games. If you are looking for updates and analysis while you are on the go (or even as you are watching the game on television), the NewsOK live coverage is the best you are going to find.
  • Live scoreboards for the high school football (statewide) and college football (nationwide). As soon as we know, you will know.
  • Updated standings, stats, schedules for every high school football team in the state. Just download our Varsity Stats app. It’s the most complete information on high school football in the state.
  • A continuous stream of information on OU and OSU sports on the NewsOK Mobile site. Just navigate to the OU or OSU page. If you are a fan of one of those schools, you will want to bookmark those pages or save a shortcut from your home screen. It will become your home base for getting information about those schools on your phone.
  • On top of all that, they also produce great wrap-ups of the games in The Oklahoman every Saturday and Sunday, and the most complete coverage anywhere in The Oklahoman and on NewsOK.com.

From the experts to the story-tellers who are trying to understand the experts. The Oklahoman and NewsOK.com have football season completely covered.
