It was an award-winning week for The Oklahoman/NewsOK.com

Monday morning was nice.

It started with a trophy.

Dave Morris strolled into the office with a surprise from his visit to Palo Alto, Calif.

The Oklahoman/NewsOK.com was honored with the Best Mobile Platform award at the joint APME/ASNE conference over the weekend. It’s a joint conference between the Associated Press Media Editors and the American Society of News Editors.

Dave was at the conference along with editor Kelly Dyer Fry to present to colleagues from around the country for the prestigious Innovator of the Year Award from the APME.

You see, it was already a good Monday. The Oklahoman happens to be the only three-time finalist for the Innovator of the Year Award. We know a little bit about that honor.

Dave went. He presented. The crowd tweeted. Then the crowd cheered.

The Boston Herald took home that award, though. It was a close vote.

No big deal being voted the second-most innovative in the country this year.

But apparently, we are in first place when it comes to our mobile initiatives this year.

It turns out that The Best Mobile Platform award wasn’t really a surprise to all of us. We actually knew about this honor earlier this year when it was announced. But it wasn’t at the top of my mind on Monday morning until Dave dropped by with the trophy.

It’s been months since the honor was announced, so it was a pleasant Monday surprise to everybody.

I took the trophy to our developers. After all, they play a huge role in our mobile platforms. They’ve helped conceptualize, design and build the NewsOK Now app, the NewsOK app, the NewsOK mobile site. They also built the popular apps for our premium subscribers – The Oklahoman app, The Oklahoman Radio and the Go Code functionality on The Oklahoman’s mobile site.

I took the trophy to our Advertising team. They already knew our mobile platforms were excellent. They see the audience numbers, and they make sure our sponsors’ messages are placed alongside all the articles, blogs, photos and videos.

And I took the trophy to our newsroom. After all, they produce the exclusive articles, blogs, photos and videos that power the platforms. It’s tireless work. It’s good to be reminded that you lead the industry.

Everybody had a good week.

Every Monday should start with a trophy.
