Let’s talk spring fashion

Sweater weather is barely here, but let’s push the pause button on fall and talk about spring clothes, the pieces we’ll be eager to wear in five months.

Here’s a hint: Fringe is still in and there’s plenty of texture, but not a lot of glitz. Leggings and yoga pants aren’t going away. Skinny jeans still dominate, but bootleg and flares keep trying to make a stand. And a great white shirt is always a must-have.

At the recent Dallas Market Center’s apparel and accessories market, Gregor Simmons shared what she sees as the strongest trends for spring. Simmons has a New York-based marketing, consulting and buying office, specializing in specialty stores.

Simmons said she doesn’t think there’s any one trend that says buy me, buy me. Instead, the spring fashion season seems to be an ongoing combination of styles that define fall also. Certainly plenty of beautiful colors and ideas will entice for a look that’s new and fresh. Here's how Simmons breaks down the season:

Boho. Bigger than ever with fringe, lace, ethnic patterns, jumpsuits, ponchos, rompers, sheer blouses and tunics.

Active/lifestyle. It’s becoming an important part of life and doesn’t just focus on athletic. Track pants, sweatshirts and hoodies get accented with hardware, mesh, lace, sheer and color blocking. She describes the movement as directional sportswear with athletic day wear and edgy utilitarian looks.

Feminine mystique. She said this trend is polished, but not all buttoned up and structured. Look for beautiful fabrics, skirts with volume, simple sheath dresses, wider leg pants, long culottes, jumpsuits, powdery pastels and bare shoulders. One stand-out is the new twinset, a short top, sweater or jacket in knit or a constructed fabric paired with a calf-length pencil skirt with a higher waist. And get ready to slip into collarless jackets and elongated vests, sometimes trimmed in chiffon.

Outerwear in sportswear. Hoods, water-resistant fabrics, trench coats, nylon bombers and collarless jackets.

Color story. White, yellow, leaf green, pink, peach, melon, sneaker blue, clear red, stone colors, black and powdery pastels.

Accents: Lace, sheer, laser cut, mesh, fringe, raw edges, cut-outs, lacing, grommets, beading, sequins, zippers, ruffles, stripes and tassels.
