The Canebrake closes effective immediately, and Oklahoma is a little less awesome

Sad tidings out of Wagoner today with the announcement The Canebrake closed effective immediately.

The world-class spa, resort and restaurant owned by chef Sam Bracken and his wife and yoga-instructor Lisa won’t reopen due to the loss of a key private investor, according to a release.

Sam Bracken said he’s currently seeking a buyer for the property overlooking Lake Ft. Gibson.

The resort opened in 2007 and has welcomed more than 90,000 guests, offering eco-friendly, luxury accommodations, an award-winning restaurant, an Ayurvedic spa, a boutique and a state-of-the-art yoga studio, the Yoga Barn.

The move comes not long after a $2 million dollar expansion was completed in July.

“We are deeply saddened to have to close our doors,” said Sam and Lisa Bracken, co-owners of The Canebrake. “The Canebrake has brought us such joy over the years, and we are extremely grateful to our staff and guests from around the world who have supported us. We are actively seeking a buyer for this incredible property, and we hope to find someone who will cherish it as we have.”

Gift certificates for The Canebrake will be refunded in full. Guests should contact The Canebrake at (918) 485-1810 prior to Feb. 28, 2016 for a refund.

This is a crushing loss for the Oklahoma tourist trade as The Canebrake offered an experience usually reserved for high-profile vacation destinations. Bracken’s phenomenal restaurant was home to the most stunning Sunday brunch in the state in an unmatched setting.

I spent one of the great weekends of my life there five years ago. As with the impending closure of The Coach House, the void The Canebrake will leave behind will be practically impossible to fill. Here’s hoping Sam, who is an Oklahoma City native, and Lisa can find a new way to share their considerable talents.
