'The Writer's Room' podcasts share the stories behind the stories

It’s a reporter sharing what they know.

They do that every day in the newspaper and on Oklahoman.com. They share more online on NewsOK.com. Then they step into The Oklahoman’s video studio and share what they know with moving pictures.

And now they are sharing even more of the story behind the story with audio productions from The Oklahoman’s sound studio. Tucked in the far corner of our downtown offices, the podcast area is a hidden gem of state-of-the-art multimedia studio.

We’ve put it to good use recently. “The Writer’s Room” is an ongoing series of podcasts where reporters and other experts give our audience a deep look into the stories they are producing.

In the most recent example, health reporter Jaclyn Cosgrove talks about the first installment in her series Epidemic Ignored, which is a yearlong investigation into Oklahoma’s mental health system.

Jaclyn’s podcast is 10 minutes. It’s perfect for a commute.

Over the last few months, we’ve produced podcasts on …

  • the possibility of earthquake damage in some of Oklahoma’s building.
  • a recap of 2015.
  • the reporting of our long-form story about the crash at the OSU homecoming parade.
  • the increase of mental health problems for college students.

There are many more topics, as well. All of these are easily available and findable in iTunes and other podcast applications. They are also available on Soundcloud – just search for NewsOK and find The Writer’s Room playlist. We also embed these podcasts into articles on NewsOK and with the written reports on the site.

They aren’t hard to find. And they are well worth your time.
