A bookstore for Midtown? A grocery store for downtown?
A couple years ago a survey was conducted to see what retail was desired most downtown. No surprise a grocery ranked No. 1. And it's not a surprise either that a pharmacy was ranked No. 2. And despite years of predictions that the printed word was about to meet its demise thanks to the Internet, books appear to holding their own, thank you very much.
Could our dreams be close to coming true? I've been reporting for the past few months that Walmart is looking at locations downtown to open a Neighborhood Market. We came very close to seeing an urban CVS open at Century Center a couple of years ago, and I believe we will get on the radar for a pharmacy as our population continues to increase.
And we might just be getting an independent bookstore in Midtown. The first hint is a new Twitter account started last week for "Commonplace Books." The account indicates the bookstore will be located in Midtown. The deal is not quite done yet, but I'm told we should be hearing more details soon.
