Queen Jose

Birthday dinner: Jose Freede celebrated her birthday on April 1 with a small dinner party at the Oklahoma City Golf & Country Club. Hosts were Barbara and Bud Beeler, Christy and Jim Everest, Dana and Chris Gordon, and Pam and Bill Shdeed.

The invitation: It read: “Our favorite Brit is turning 90! Your presence is requested for cocktails and dinner in honor of Queen Jose. Given with love by her Merry Court.”

Royal treatment: Dinner was the honoree's favorite foods, beginning with an appetizer of chicken crepes and spiced peaches. The hosts also served beef Wellington, English peas, and lemon and chocolate tarts with a Country Club special meringue cookie. Brandy ices followed dessert. Flowers were beautiful bouquets of yellow, pink, white and lavender tulips, red anemones, pink and white peonies, pink and blue hydrangeas, pink roses and hyacinths, white sweet peas, pink orchids, white and pink ranunculus and bachelor buttons.

Paying homage: Tricia Everest led the birthday toasts.

The royal subjects: Among the guests were Cathy Freede, Margaret and Dan Owens, Everest, Louise and Clay Bennett, Joan Gilmore, Debby and Paul Dudman and Jerriann Altshulter, Jay Freede, Janet Freede and Charles Freede.

Hats off to you!

Luncheon: Members of the Greater Oklahoma City Alumnae Panhellenic were hosts for their special “Panhellenic Woman of the Year “ luncheon held at the Oklahoma City Golf & Country Club. Theme was “Hats Off To The Women of The Year” and many of the guests wore colorful spring hats. Decorations included more hats, blue hydrangeas and light blue tablecloths.

Presentation: The award-winners were introduced by family members, sorority sisters and friends, with members of the OKC Fire Department assisting the women onto the stage. Amy Edwards was master of ceremonies. Guests included the five students who received scholarships this past year.

Teeing it up

Spring luncheon: Members of the Ladies' 9-and-18-Hole Golf Association at the Oklahoma City Golf & Country Club held the annual spring luncheon in the Sable Room. Season activities, tournaments and events were announced and there was a fashion show featuring spring and summer golf attire.

New officers: Announced at the event were officers for the 18-Hole Group. They are Cindy Arnold, president; Marilyn Meade, vice-president; Melody Brown, secretary/treasurer; Helen Sullivan, sports chairman; Jill Dobbins, Brenda Lowry, Anne Workman, tournament committee; and Ellen Lisle, past president. For the 9-Hole group, officers are Dian Everett, president; Susan Edwards, vice-president; Ellen Morgan, treasurer and sports chairman; Susan Dobson and Lisle, social chairmen; and Lori Hill, past president.

Honoring state leaders

Gala: Four awards were given at the Leadership Oklahoma annual Excellence in Leadership Gala at Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa. Event attendees totaled 230.

Winners: Tom McDaniel, Oklahoma City, won the Leadership Oklahoma Lifetime Achievement Award; Steve Turnbo, Tulsa, received the Distinguished Graduate Award. The Business Leadership Award went to Perry Publishing & Broadcasting Co. under the direction of Russell Perry and now his son, Kevin S. Perry. The State Community Award was given to the Oklahoma Energy Resources Board.

Chairmen: Rita and Sam Combs, Tulsa, and Cheryl and Tom Evans, Tonkawa, were co-chairmen for the event.

A word from the president: “Each year, Leadership Oklahoma recognizes the outstanding contributions of Oklahoma corporate and individual leaders for their commitment and service to elevating the quality of life and empowering our state for greater prosperity,” said Marion Paden, President and CEO of Leadership Oklahoma. “This year's Excellence in Leadership award recipients are truly deserving, based upon the remarkable and meaningful differences they have made in Oklahoma. It is our privilege to honor them.”

Descendants convene for lunch

Event: Members of the William Rives Chapter of Colonial Dames met for a luncheon at the Oklahoma City Golf & Country Club. Norman Hughes spoke about “Stephen Hopkins, Rascal Colonist.”

Food/flowers: Quiche and fruit were served. Fresh spring flower bouquets were set on pink tablecloths.

Business: Pat McFall presented the new officer's slate.

Membership: Members are invited to join the society as lineal descendants of an ancestor who lived and served before 1701 in one of the original colonies in the geographical area of the present United States of America. Documentary proof is required.
