An Improved Corner at Broadway and Sheridan

January, 1977. It's a month I remember well - the month my late father, Robert Lackmeyer, opened the Sheraton Century Center Hotel. The hotel was only new guest destination successfully added during the hey day of the 1960s-1970s urban renewal era.

The hotel was a silo. That's not a knock on the architects. It was the 1970s. Street life was non-existent. A surface parking lot stood at the northeast corner of Broadway and Sheridan. A sprawling concrete plaza separated the convention center from the street. So it made sense that the corner of the hotel at Broadway and Sheridan was treated as an afterthought, just a an expansive green space with the hotel restaurant hidden from the street.

Downtown changed. The hotel went through some renovations. The attached Century Center mall died, and then was reborn as a sleek, modern home for The Oklahoman, Mahogany Steakhouse, Café 7, St. Anthony Physicians and a YMCA branch.

But that corner at Broadway and Sheridan has remained pretty much unchanged.

It looks like that is set to change. In plans filed last week with the city, the hotel is seeking to create a new street entrance, create an outdoor bar with seating, arbors and lights. It should be a nice change to the corner. The following set of images were submitted to show the materials to be used in the new bar and entrance.
