Parties, Etc.: Aug. 20, 2017: Helen Ford Wallace
Event: The evening began with the “Angel's Reception” for the sponsors of the Archbishop's Dinner, followed by cocktails and dinner at the Oklahoma City Golf & Country. The Most Rev. Paul S. Coakley, archbishop of Oklahoma City, and the Board of Directors of the Catholic Foundation of Oklahoma, were hosts.
Special guests: Among the 300 guests were the 17 seminarians who are studying for the priesthood in the Archdiocese of Oklahoma City.
The beneficiary: Beneficiary of the dinner was the Saint John Vianney Seminarian Education Endowment Fund at the Catholic Foundation. The endowment fund, with an initial founding gift of $50,000, which was made earlier this summer, makes grants to the seminarian education program at the Archdiocese of Oklahoma City. The fund is named after the Patron Saint of Parish Priests, St. John Vianney, a French priest who is internationally known for his spiritual transformation of the community of Ars, France.
Angel's reception: At the reception, guests had their pictures taken with the archbishop and enjoyed piano music by Teresa Brekke.
Dinner: On the menu was beef filet with red wine demi-glace, whipped potatoes, vegetables, spinach salad with berries, feta cheese and almonds, and chocolate mousse with brownie bottom glazed in dark chocolate shine and raspberry sauce. The wine pairings were Italian, and, at the conclusion of dinner, an Italian liqueur, Lemoncello, was served. Table centerpieces were vases filled with red roses.
Taking the stage: The program included remarks from Coakley; introduction of the seminarians for Director of Seminarians, the Rev. Joseph Irwin; a testimonial from the senior seminarian Deacon Vic Luong, an update on vocations by Director of Vocations, the Rev. Brian Buettner; and a video of the recently held Quo Vadis Days (summer retreat for young men discerning for the priesthood). Holy cards of St. John Vianney, blessed by the archbishop, were given to the guests. Karen Kenworthy was dinner chairman. (Thanks, Barney Semtner, executive director of the Catholic Foundation of Oklahoma Inc. He provided photos and information about this event.)

ART IN TAOS, NEW MEXICO
Occasion: Oklahoma State University students and lifelong learners were at the Doel Reed Center for the Arts, an art mecca located in Taos, New Mexico, for July courses covering a variety of topics, including New Mexico ecology and visual landscape, area-specific arts and literature post 1940, solar printmaking, fashion and food. Instructors for the ecology and landscape class were Dave Engle and Marty Avrett, both retired professors from OSU.
A little information: Dr. Carol Moder, director of the Center, compared the experience to studying abroad because participants were immersed in a unique culture and geographic area. The center attracts visiting artists and scholars to produce original works, teach seminars and collaborate with creative minds of any age or academic discipline.
Coming up: Another set of Leisure Learning courses will begin Sept. 28 and registration is still open. Classes and registration instructions can be found at drca.okstate.edu.
