Parties, Etc. for Sunday, Sept. 24, 2017: Helen Ford Wallace

WHAT WOULD ANNIE SAY?

Luncheon/awards: Using Annie Oakley's motto of “Aim High”, members of the Annie Oakley Society met for lunch at the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum and honored best-selling author Mary Higgins Clark. She received the society's prestigious award.

Those who came before: AOS Leadership Team members Cathy Keating and Judy Hatfield are doing a fine job of telling the story of the women of the West. The society celebrates Western heritage by honoring significant women who have achieved a remarkable first or who have been national trailblazers. Past inductees have been the Hon. Sandra Day O'Connor, Reba McEntire, Nadia Comaneci, Kristin Chenoweth, Adm. Michelle Howard, Donna Shirley, and now the 2017 honoree, Mary Higgins Clark. Keating is the AOS Chairman and Hatfield is the AOS Oklahoma Chairman. Others on the team are Ann Ackerman, Mary Ellen Alexander, Terri Cooper, Freda Deskin, Tricia Everest, Billie McKnight and Avis Scaramucci. Mary Higgins Clark and Gov. Mary Fallin had an onstage conversation about Clark's life and best-selling suspense novels.

Lifetime Achievement: The Lifetime Achievement Award went to local businesswoman and philanthropist Judy Love. “Everyone in this room has been touched in some way by Judy Love,” Hatfield said as she introduced the honoree.

On the program: Keating and Hatfield were mistresses of ceremonies. Rachel Tipton & Changing Winds Society Indian Princesses gave the national anthem. Jane Jayroe Gamble led the prayer. Entertainment was by the Oklahoma Children's Theatre directed by Lyn Adams. Keating gave a report about the funds which continue to grow in preparation for the educational playground at the museum that will teach the history and code of the American West through hands-on and minds-on play.

New this year: The Little Sure Shot Marketplace was set up outside the lunch area. Pop-up shops were available for shopping. “Aim High” votive candles tied with pink ribbons and with a lovely smell were party favors, along with one of Clark's recent books.

The night before: Clark was guest of honor at the Oklahoma Governor's Mansion as Gov. Mary Fallin invited a few friends to dinner to meet the award winner. Clark's airplane was delayed by weather, but she did arrive at the event in time for an Oklahoma dessert of peach fried pie, pecan bar and vanilla ice cream.

A word about the table: White roses, zinnias and blue hydrangeas in crystal bowls were centerpieces and beautiful tribal plates served as charger plates for the dinner. Oklahoman symbols were embroidered on the crisp white linen napkins. Dinner featured roasted pumpkin soup, smoked salmon stacks, potato cake with dill cream, and smoked salmon lox and chives.

Annie Oakley: Annie Oakley would have been right at home at the Governor's Mansion because in the 1880s she became a renowned international star with Buffalo Bills' Wild West Show, performing before royalty and heads of state. She aimed high!

HONORING ED

Dinner: Annie Bohanon and Henry Browne were hosts at a dinner for Ed Barth. He is the new chairman of the board of the Oklahoma City Museum of Art. Guests were executive board members. The party was in the Tasting Room at the Will Rogers Theater.

Flowers/speakers: Each table had a flower arrangement and a pot of succulents. Bohanon gave Barth an artist's card with a Mapplethorpe flower depicting his love of flowers, and said a few words welcoming the guests. Judge Jerome Holmes, outgoing chairman of the museum, gave a brief talk.

At the party: Among the guests were Penny and John McCaleb, Tina and Elby Beal, Sharon and John Bozalis, Cynda and Larry Ottaway, Leslie and Cliff Hudson, Jeri and Jerome Holmes, Bette Jo and Frank Hill, and Karen and Pete Delaney.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, RAWSIE

Party: Rawsie Boyles was the honoree at a 75th birthday party in the home Kanela Huff. Hosts were Huff, Kyle Anderson, Jeb Bucher, Sue Magness, Judy and David Ragland, Tina and Dick Stubbs, Berit and Jack Sweeney, and Lisa Voegeli.

Decor/entertainment: The house was decorated with Boyle's family photos and a slideshow with music featuring every photo that the hosts could find. Blue hydrangeas and pink roses were the centerpieces. Jeff Wood played the guitar and sang.

Food: A large strawberry cake with roses and berries was served, along with Voegeli's famous decorated sugar cookies. Boyles, an expert lobster cook, created her own lobster dip for the party.

Seen: Among those attending the event were Jill and Tom King, Mary Ann Malone, Charles Lutz, Barbara Earnest, Shari Buxton, Bev and David Carter, Lucy Beeler, Kay Blake, Jamie Gaddis, Sandy Shapard, Judy Lehmbeck, Kim and David Bohanon, Kathy Rodgers and George Wilson.

KICKOFF PARTY

Racing tradition: The Redbud Classic's kickoff event celebrating the race's 36th anniversary year was held in the home of Redbud Executive Director Patty Anthony. The event introduced new board members and recognized the 2017-18 board officers. New board members are Emily Anderson, Quint Anderson, Casey Delaney, Katie Griffin, Craig Parker, Rachel Uraneck and Trey Whitley. Board officers are Jeff Auchenbach, president; Sandra Payne, vice-president; Kelsey Jennings, secretary; and Anna Bledsoe, treasurer.

Whiz Kids: Also announced was Whiz Kids Oklahoma as the race's 2018 beneficiary. Proceeds from the race weekend, set for April 7-8, will further Whiz Kids Oklahoma's mission to provide mentors, friends and role models for under-resourced children in Oklahoma City and help them learn to read.
