Road closures in DOWNTOWN OKC

When it comes to OKC and ongoing construction projects, Penny Lane from the 2000 film "Almost Famous" said it best: "It's all happening."

With the arrival of more of Oklahoma City's streetcars which are either a really cool development in our town's history, or the bane of your existence.

The streetcars are currently in the testing phase and if all goes well, will be prowling the streets of downtown by the end of the year, marking the end of the $130 million project and the beginning of downtown drivers sharing the road with their shiny new friends.

But in the meantime, here's a look at where construction --  streetcar or otherwise -- stands as of this week. In a story last year I joked the city should put a traffic cone on its seal. Not much has changed.

Things will get more complicated when the final phase of construction of Oklahoma City Avenue gets in full swing this spring and summer, with an expected completion sometime in 2019. That project will mean closure of Robinson/Thunder/Ron Norick Drive which has become a popular "backdoor" route into the core of downtown for drivers exiting at Shields Blvd. looking to avoid headaches on E.K. Gaylord.
