The Morning Brew: Goodbye, Toys "R" Us

Toys "R" us is going out of business

Toys "R" Us went belly up Tuesday, ending the toy retailer's long death spiral as brick and mortar retail continues to struggle.

There are/were two stores in Oklahoma City, one on NW 138 and another on SE 66. Both will likely be gone soon. I don't remember Toys "R" Us opening in Oklahoma City, but I remember when the big bright shiny new store opened in my native Tulsa in about 1980, and it was a big deal for any kid.

Just getting your parents to take you there was a big deal. And even if they didn't buy anything it was cool to look around the store. I'm sure my parents rolled their dread-filled eyes every time I brought up Toys "R" Us. Most memorable purchase: A 2-person inflatable raft with plastic oars.

Here's a look back at Toys "R" Us starting with vintage TV ads:

Here's a look back at some scenes from OKC's stores:

Founded in 1948, Toys "R" Us operated more than 1,000 stores nationwide with the help of 60,000 employees. The company filed for bankruptcy last year, and announced the closure of nearly 200 stores.

The baby pictured above with the Geoffrey, the store's mascot, is now in her early 20s. Maybe that was the company's problem. All the Toys "R" Us kids eventually grew up in the end, and started shopping at Amazon.
