Abercrombie & Fitch to launch JFK-inspired collection

A pair of chinos owned by John F. Kennedy was the inspiration for a capsule collection launching Tuesday at Abercrombie & Fitch.

The 10-piece collection includes an updated version of those chinos as well as a 1960s replica of a white fleece hoodie with an A&F Sailing Club logo; a sailing jacket with the A&F storm logo; T-shirts in shades of red, white and blue; and paisley print and rope print swim shorts.

The idea for the collection came about when Abercrombie & Fitch learned that a pair of its chinos owned by JFK was to be sold at auction last year. Of course, the brand had to buy those pants.

The khaki boating pants in a size 33 came with an authenticity letter from Kennedy’s former secretary and a picture of the President wearing them during a boating expedition, according to a story in WWD.

That marked the start of research into Abercrombie & Fitch archives and the result is a JFK-inspired capsule collection.

The updated chinos are 100 percent cotton twill with a slightly oversize fit, a high waist and straight leg, retailing for $98.

“We kept the longer rise, the fuller leg and the heavy and rigid fabric, but we played with the saddle shape so that it would be more flattering to our customer,” said Aaron Levine, A&F’s creative director.

Abercrombie & Fitch was founded as an upscale sporting store by David T Abercrombie in 1892.  Soon after, Ezra Fitch bought a part of the company, which was renamed Abercrombie & Fitch.

In the WWD story, Levine said the JFK capsule is considered a “a heritage collection,” and he hopes more will come. The brand counts Ernest Hemingway, Theodore Roosevelt, Hunter S. Thompson and other luminaries as customers.
