LADIES IN THE NEWS

Luncheon/fashion show: The 52nd annual Oklahoma Hospitality Club Ladies in the News Luncheon and fashion show was held at the Oklahoma City Golf & Country Club. Becky Ivins was chairman and Ann Simank was co-chairman.

Runway ready: Honorees included Cheryl Borelli, Suzanne Broadbent, Maxine Decocq, Jennifer Grigsby, Willa Johnson, Robin Stephenson-Bratcher, Gail Box, Terri Cornett, Kelly Dyer Fry, Cynthia Henderson, Lisa Kalman and Donita Thomas. The women modeled fashions from Dillards.

The right mix: Linda Cavanaugh was mistress of ceremonies and Marnie Taylor was honorary chairman. Taylor gave an inspiring talk about the ladies in the news and news in general and Connie Schlittler and Steve Ross talked about their respective groups which are grant recipients of the OHC. Jim Ivins was the soloist. Raffle baskets were distributed and lunch was chicken crepes in mushroom cream sauce. Colorful spring plants in pots were centerpieces.

ON MY HONOR

Dinner: The Last Frontier Council of the Boy Scouts of America honored The Nichols Family with the 2018 E.C. Joullian Distinguished Citizen Award. The award recognized Polly and Larry Nichols and their family for a lifetime of contributions to Scouting and the community. The event was at the Skirvin Hilton Hotel.

Program: On the program were Jeff Woolsey, Ron Norick, John Richels, Frank Hill, David Reid and David Rainbolt. A video tribute about the Nichols was shown to the 400 guests. A patriotic flag procession by Boy Scouts preceded dinner.

Decorations: Tables created by floral designers at Trochta's Flowers and Garden Center had centerpieces representing scouting and hiking in the forest. There were bouquets of wildflowers including columbines, ranunculus, anemones and delphinium, lanterns, campfires, hiking boots, butterflies, bird nests, logs, trees, rocks, driftwood and hiking trail maps.

Menu: Braised short ribs and salmon, with wild mushroom and artichoke risotto were on the menu, along with a s'mores tart featuring toasted marshmallows.

Outside the banquet hall: 100 Boy Scouts presented displays showing their scouting experiences. They set up tents and Scout ranch displays, as well as a derby car display. They also lined up as guests exited the dinner and thanked each person for his/her support of Boy Scouts.

Committees: Sue Ann Hyde and Carol Troy were co-chairman of the program committee and committee members were Karen Browne, Kristine Browne, Ann Johnstone and Charlotte Richels. Sponsor committee chairmen were Norick and John Richels and committee members were Bill Lance, Ed Martin, David Rainbolt, Lee Allan Smith, David Thompson, Sean Trauschke and Blake Wade. David Reid is Council president.

CELEBRATING 70 YEARS

Banquet: Members of the Oklahoma City Association of Phi Beta Kappa celebrated the 70th anniversary of the group at the annual banquet which was at the Oklahoma City Golf & Country Club. The honorary scholarship society is open to all Phi Beta Kappas in the metropolitan area.

Speaker: Ed Kelley, Dean of the Gaylord College of Journalism and Mass Communications at the University of Oklahoma, was the speaker. He is also a Phi Beta Kappa from OU and has been Editor of The Oklahoman and The Washington Times. He is in the Oklahoma Journalism Hall of Fame and was named Editor of the Year by the National Press Foundation.

Annual award: Brooke Smith Murphy was honored as Phi Beta Kappa of the Year. This award recognizes a member who has contributed to the association and the community and state. Among the past winners have been Patience Latting, David L. Boren and Hannah Atkins.

Scholarships: Recipients of college scholarships were announced. They are funded by donations from the association's members.

CHOCTAW'S AFJROTC MILITARY BALL

Event: Choctaw High School's AFJROTC's Military Ball was held at the Boren Activity Center. Over 200 cadets, guests and visitors from four AFJROTC units were introduced and they walked through a saber arch and were greeted by a receiving line.

Formal start: Guests stood for the Presentation of The Colors, the singing of the national anthem, a tribute to POW/MIAs and the invocation. A formal dinner was served and after the cake cutting, dancing began.
