HONORING EMMA AND BRYAN

Cocktail party: Emma Sherman and Bryan Sayler were honored at a cocktail party and wedding shower in the home of Theresa Stringer. Hosts were Dan Bansen, Dana and Chris Gordon, Barbara and Patrick Hill, Kay Ludwig, Marcia and Mack Morgan, Gayla and Tommy Stapleton and Ann Trost.

Shower gift: The hosts gave the engaged couple a pair of Simon Pearce hurricane glass candle holders.

Wedding: Emma and Bryan will be married June 16.

HONORING CATHY

Luncheon: Judy Love was hostess for a luncheon honoring Cathy Keating before her induction as one of the Oklahoma City University Societies honorees. Keating invited people who she felt had contributed to her receiving the award. She gave all of the guests special candles.

Menu: Three cold salads and two desserts by Debby Davis were served. Flower centerpieces were sunflowers and baby's breath.

Seen: Among the guests were Jane Jayroe Gamble, Debby Hampton, Marnie Taylor, Ann Felton Gilliland, Joan Gilmore, Kris Frankfurt and Mary Ellen Alexander.

CONGRATULATIONS, PRESIDENT HENRY

Retirement celebration: The Hatton W. Sumners Foundation honored Oklahoma City President Robert Henry with its Distinguished Public Service Award during a surprise presentation at Henry's retirement party recently. The foundation recognized Henry for his career in all three branches of government including his time as chief judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the 10th Circuit, his career as dean of the OCU School of Law, his eight years as OCU president and his many civic and philanthropic endeavors.

From the president: “I am greatly honored to receive this award,” Henry said. “Congressman Sumners was a hero, patriot and public servant of the highest order. To be associated with him in this way is a signal honor that I will cherish all of my life. I am grateful to Hugh Akin and the distinguished trustees of the foundation who are all noted public servants.”

At the party: The theme for the event was “Much Ado About Robert” and was held at the OCU School of Law. Mike Turpen was master of ceremonies. Board Chairman Ron Norick announced during the evening that the Robert H. Henry Endowed Chair in Humanities and Law will be established in honor of the president. Henry will retire as the 17th president of Oklahoma City University on June 30.

AWARDS FOR EXCELLENCE

Awards dinner: The Oklahoma Center for Nonprofits announced that Tulsa Area United Way won the 2018 Tulsa Community Foundation Award for Excellence. The Center held its eleventh annual Oklahoma Nonprofit Excellence (ONE) Awards in Tulsa, honoring nonprofits from throughout the state for leadership and service. Marnie Taylor is President and CEO of the Oklahoma Center for Nonprofits.

Other winners: The Chickasaw Nation Award for Arts & Humanities, deadCenter film; Potts Family Foundation Award for Community, Tulsa Area United Way; Moran Family Foundation and Inasmuch Foundation Award for Education, General Tommy Franks Leadership Institute and Museum; The Anne & Henry Zarrow Foundation and Herman Kaiser Foundation Award for Health Services, Jim Riley Outreach.

Also: Express Employment Professionals Award for Self Sufficiency, The Curbside Chronicle; Boeing Award for Seniors, TSHA; The H.A. and Mary K. Chapman Charitable Foundations Award for Youth Development, A New Leaf; Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma, Chahta Foundation; and Cherokee Nation Open Category Award, Opportunities, Inc. CAA.

The tally: This year's grant total for Oklahoma Nonprofit Excellence is $1,65 million. Nonprofits may use the prize money as they see fit to aid current programs and make changes for their organizations. The ONE Awards honored a total of 24 organizations in eight categories: arts and humanities, community, education, health services, open services, self-sufficiency, seniors, and youth development. Additionally, the center named the overall winner of the event. All 24 nonprofits receive at least a $5,000 prize, and category winners receive $7,500. The overall winner receives a grand prize of $10,000.

SPRING DINNER DANCE

Event: Members of the Mayfair Club had the Spring Dinner Dance at the Oklahoma City Golf & Country Club. About 130 members and guests danced to the music of the Floyd Haynes Orchestra.

Performance: Students from Life Change Ballroom dancers performed during the evening.

Dinner: On the menu was almond breaded chicken, orzo pasta with strawberry balsamic sauce, and graham cracker, mint chocolate mousse and milk chocolate ganache. The tables were decorated with a variety of geraniums.

Next event: An October dinner dance is planned.

MEET ALEXANDER

Party: Oklahoma City Orchestra League members were hosts for a party called “An Evening for the Senses.” The evening's highlight was meeting Alexander Mickelthwate, Oklahoma City Philharmonic's Music Director Designate.

Food/flowers: Kam's Kookery provided small bites of shrimp, pork tenderloin, salmon, salad in little cups. The buffet table featured music instruments and sheets of music to set the theme.

Music: Sam Kahre provided music. He plays the cello and is a former music competition winner.
