Several Oklahoma City schools were renamed last year. The Oklahoman's Tim Willert takes a look at how the first day of school played out.

Reaction was mixed Thursday to temporary signs reflecting the new names of three schools in the Oklahoma City district.

Mary Golda Ross, Esperanza and Adelaide Lee elementary schools were previously named for Confederate generals Stonewall Jackson, Robert E. Lee and Stand Watie.

In May, the school board voted to rescind the names of Jackson, 2601 S Villa, Robert E. Lee, 424 SW 29, and Watie, 3517 S Linn.

Lee parent Anita Herrera said she knew about the name change but didn't see the need to do it.

"Most people don't really know what it was about or what he did before," Herrera said as she waited to pick up her daughters on the second day of school for the Oklahoma City district.
