Parties, Etc. for Sunday Sept. 23, 2018

RENAISSANCE BALL

Event: The 43rd Renaissance Ball for the Oklahoma City Museum of Art was held at the Oklahoma City Golf & Country Club. The theme was inspired by the OCMOA's fall exhibition, Victorian Radicals, and featured a romantic flair with beautiful rose bouquets on the table, displays of roses and orchids at the front door and around the rooms, and large portraits by the artists of the era hung throughout the club. Genea Vallion and Trochta's decorated for the event. Jennifer and Aaron Ketter were ball chairmen and Caroline and Durward Hendee were co-chairmen.

Honorary chairmen: Honored at the ball were Bette Jo and Frank Hill, OCMOA supporters for many years.

Dinner: On the menu was filet of beef with tomato chutney and dried fruit and sausage stuffed quail, Victorian fruit pie, spiced walnuts, apricots, raisins, and cherries in brandy custard. Music was by Souled Out.

Seen: Among the partygoers were Tina and Elby Beal, Annie Bohanon, Henry Browne Jr., Sharon and John Bozalis, Karen and Bob Browne, Susan and Carl Edwards, Anne and Barry Gray, Genea Vallion, Donna Vogel, Bud White, Marnie and Clayton Taylor, Mary and Bill Price, Joan Payne, Patti and Mark Mellow, Marilyn and Bud Meade, Judy and Tom Love, Penny and John McCaleb, Anne Workman, Bill Paul, Ann and Bob Gilliland, Jose Freede, and Joan Gilmore.

SCHOLARSHIP DINNER

Occasion: The Oklahoma Chapter of the Freedoms Foundation at Valley Forge met for dinner on Sept. 11 at Oklahoma Christian University.

On the program: The “Spirit of America Scholarship Dinner” featured (Ret.) Lt. Col. Allen B West. Linda Haneborg gave the welcome and Barbara Atkinson led the Pledge of Allegiance and the singing of “America The Beautiful” and “Oklahoma.” Proceeds were to help fund scholarships for students and teachers and educational programs.

Special guest: David Harmer, president and CEO of Freedoms Foundation at Valley Forge, talked about the organization. Don Powers, Oklahoma City Chapter president, gave the invocation.

QUEENSBERRY CELEBRATES 85 YEARS

Tailgate kick-off: Queensberry Club members celebrated the 85th year of their club with a dinner at the Oklahoma City Golf & Country Club The party was a “tailgate kick-off” party on the Veranda. Martha Bradshaw is president. Linda Rodgers was head host.

New members: New members introduced were Janie and Jon Axton, Tina and Elby Beal, Connell and Cliff Branan, Laura and Reeder Ratliff, and Linda and Steve Slawson.

On the menu: Nachos, sliders, fried chicken and ice cream sundaes were served to the guests.

A little history: The club began during the depression years as a bridge/dinner club. There were 12 couples. It is the oldest club still meeting at the OCG&CC.

JRB'S FIRST FRIDAY

Reception: At the Paseo District's First Friday Gallery Walk, JRB Art at the Elms featured artists Carol Beesley, Bob Nunn, Alan Atkinson and Janet O'Neal. Chef Ryan Parrot, of Picasso Café, prepared his signature white queso; spinach, artichoke and triple cream cheese dip; hummus, olive tapenade, and herbed flatbread with cheese and fruit plates.

Guests: Among the people there were John Brandenburg, Pam Husky, Carol Koss, Trent Lawson, David Glover, Jessica Harper, Glendell Nix, Lea and Mike Morgan, Vicki Shackleford, Randy Marks and Amanda Bleakley.

CELEBRATING BIRTHDAYS

Luncheon: A group of friends celebrated birthdays of Carol Swink, Martha Baxter and Norma Leslie at Sean Cummings Irish Restaurant. Birthday cake was served at Swink's home.

Friends forever: The women don't meet each month but make the effort to celebrate August birthdays. They have been friends for several decades.

BOOK PROJECT

Documenting participation: Local Daughter of the American Revolution member Etta Reid helped research the book “The Battle of Guilford Courthouse, the soldiers and patriots for whom there is evidence of participation.” She was living in North Carolina at the time. The book was a project of the Guilford Battle Chapter and Rachel Caldwell Chapter of Greensboro, North Carolina, of which Reid was a member. The team of 24 members added 2,500 names to what the National Military Park had on record.

Presentation: Reid, Oklahoma State DAR State Registrar and now a member of the Oklahoma City chapter of DAR, brought the book to Oklahoma and presented it to Laura Martin, deputy director of the research division of the Oklahoma Historical Society, and Pat Miller, vice president general, and Oklahoma State Regent Sue Allen.
