HAPPY BIRTHDAY GENE

Birthday party: Gene Rainbolt knows how to throw a party! He invited 750 of his closest friends to the National Cowboys & Western Heritage Museum for music, beer and barbecue. He invited Willie Nelson to sing his favorite songs, including “Funny How Time Slips Away,” and “Always On My Mind.”

He celebrated his 90th birthday. This was the second time he celebrated with the singer. He and Nelson got together on Rainbolt’s 80th birthday.

Ambience: Guests mingled prior to dinner, during dinner and during the special concert. Billy Bob Bovine and the Embryo Transfer opened for Nelson and played during the buffet dinner of barbecued ribs, brisket, fried chicken and various sides and salads. All kinds of pies were served for dessert. Party favors were black bandanas and drink coasters. Stephen Prescott was emcee for the evening and introduced several 90-year-olds in the crowd to celebrate with the honoree. Gene gave them medallions and organized a Nonagenarian Society on the spot.

Taking the stage: Willie sang three verses of "Happy Birthday" to the honoree. He threw out several red bandanas to the crowd. Willie encouraged guests to sing along, and they did. Some of them danced between the tables to their favorite songs of “Crazy”, “My Heroes Have Always Been Cowboys,” and “On the Road Again.”

Glitterati: “Casual Concert Attire” was the dress code for the evening and people wore cowboy boots (great look, Judy Hatfield, Ann Hargis), cowboy hats (Gene himself), sparkly shirts (Barry Switzer), and lots of turquoise jewelry (nice necklace, Lori Black).

Bank on it: Rainbolt underwrote the event, dividing up ticket proceeds, ($500 donation per ticket), for cancer research between Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation and the Stephenson Cancer Center. The benefit raised $410,000.
