Oklahoma City woman arrested after baby tests positive for opioids
An Oklahoma City woman has been arrested on child endangerment and illegal drug complaints after her 9-month-old girl was hospitalized and tested positive for opioids, police reported.
Maria Irene Vasquez, 18, was arrested Sunday after officers were called to the Children's Hospital at OU Medical Center where a state Department of Human Services worker told police the baby "nearly died." Doctors told police the baby tested positive for opioids.
Vasquez told police her daughter had been asleep when the baby's lips turned blue, and Vasquez thought the baby was choking. Vasquez started to drive her daughter to a nearby hospital before she was met by an ambulance crew that took the baby the rest of the way to the emergency room.
At the hospital, Vasquez said she did not know why her daughter tested positive for opioids, according to an Oklahoma City police report. Vasquez said she thought the baby had choked on candy, but doctors did not find any candy or anything that constricted the baby's breathing. Vasquez was booked at the Oklahoma County jail where she remained Wednesday on $37,500 bail.
