An escaped Oklahoma Department of Corrections inmate was arrested after a pursuit and standoff with law officers that lasted for more than two hours early Tuesday in Oklahoma City, police reported.

About 3:50 a.m., University of Oklahoma Police officers tried to stop a driver of a sport utility vehicle on the OU Medical Center campus, but the man sped off, police Lt. Michelle Henderson said.

Gordan L. Turnipseed, 28, was arrested after surrendering in an SUV stopped on NW 10 just east of N Rockwell Avenue near N Berry Street. Officers said Turnipseed refused to get out of the vehicle and had a gun.

An arrest warrant had been issued for Turnipseed, who had a GPS tracking monitor that stopped working on March 5, a Corrections Department spokesman said.

Corrections Department Director Joe M. Allbaugh praised law officers for bringing a GPS walkaway into custody.

“Our hats are off to OUPD, Oklahoma City police and state troopers for bringing Gordan Turnipseed into custody,” Allbaugh said in a news release. “Fortunately, no one was hurt, and that’s testament to the skill of our brothers and sisters in law enforcement who do their jobs every day.”

Turnipseed was serving a six-year sentence for convictions for being a felon in possession of a firearm and drug possession with intent to distribute.

He was taken to the Oklahoma County jail Tuesday.
