WOMEN’S GYMNASTICS

No. 1 Oklahoma at Athens Regional

When: 6 p.m., Friday; TBA Saturday

Where: Stegeman Coliseum; Athens, Ga.

Streaming: ESPN3

New regional format

The top-ranked Sooners face No. 16 California, Maryland and either North Carolina State or New Hampshire in Friday’s regional opener. The top two finishers will advance to face the top two finishers from the other session, which includes No. 8 Georgia, No. 9 Kentucky, Missouri and Iowa State.

The top two from Saturday’s event advances to the NCAA semifinals beginning April 19 in Fort Worth.

Since 2010, the Sooners have won nine consecutive regional titles, though the format is different this time around.

Familiar faces

While Oklahoma has not faced any of the four teams it will be paired against Friday — North Carolina State and New Hampshire went head-to-head Thursday to see which would advance — the Sooners are plenty familiar with the teams they’ll face Saturday in all likelihood.

Oklahoma hosted Georgia on Jan. 11, faced Missouri on Jan. 26 in Fort Worth and went to Iowa State on March 11, winning all three events.

The Sooners haven’t faced Kentucky this season but beat out the Wildcats in last year’s regional.
