NORMAN — Jalen Hurts, fielding the first snap of his Sooner career, rolled to his right and found Nick Basquine for a 33-yard gain.

Though the blue No. 1 jersey Hurts wore didn’t come with the consequence of the crimson one he’ll sport come late August, Hurts’ Oklahoma debut in the spring game Friday night was encouraging to all who questioned how his passing ability would translate to Lincoln Riley’s offense.

The senior transfer from Alabama, who’s already emerged as a team leader despite not arriving in Norman until January, completed 11 of his 14 passes for 174 yards to lead the Red Team past the White Team 35-14.

Though the score was an afterthought. The crowd of more than 50,000 came to see Hurts, who found the end zone once through the air and once with his legs.

He led a seven-play, 70-yard drive on his first possession. Another highlight came on his first drive of the second half when he floated a 30-yard pass off of his back foot to freshman five-star Trejan Bridges. Hurts jetted to his right on the next play for a one-yard touchdown run.

He was reserved, almost unimpressed by his performance. But despite being a multi-year starter at Alabama, a low-pressure spring game still meant something to him.

“Any opportunity I get to step on the field I’d say is a big deal,” Hurts said. “I love the game. I’ve been playing my whole life. They always say the moment you stop getting those butterflies, those feelings before a game, you should stop playing. That time ain’t coming no time soon.”

Hurts’ primary competition at quarterback, redshirt freshman Tanner Mordecai, completed just 11 of 24 passes for the White Team with one touchdown and one interception.

“Obviously I thought I could do a lot better than that,” Mordecai said. “I wasn’t too happy with my performance.”

Oklahoma’s 2019 quarterback competition might be reminiscent of the 2018 version. Few doubted Kyler Murray as the clear favorite over Austin Kendall. A year later, few will call the battle between Hurts and Mordecai a true competition.

A one-game sample in April is not nearly enough to arrive at such a conclusion, but Hurts has been the favorite to quarterback the Sooners ever since he penned a January letter in the Players’ Tribune announcing his transfer.

“The man’s a go-getter,” defensive back Justin Broiles said. “He’s a true leader. When he steps in the room, you know Jalen Hurts is in the room.”

Friday night, under the lights of Hurts’ new home, that only became more clear.
