OU football: Lincoln Riley not opposed to naming quarterback early

NORMAN — Kyler Murray wasn't named Oklahoma's starting quarterback until Aug. 22, a week and a half before the 2018 season kicked off.

But the so-called battle between Jalen Hurts and Tanner Mordecai could be solved sooner than that of Murray and former quarterback Austin Kendall.

"When we know, and we feel 100 percent confident in that decision, we’ll do it," coach Lincoln Riley said of naming a starter. "When that falls, I don’t know. If it’s close, then a lot of times, probably a couple weeks out of the first game, then you feel like you gotta name somebody. But if a guy separates, then we’ll do it and we’ll go ahead and slant the reps at that point."

Hurts, a senior transfer from Alabama, outplayed Mordecai, a redshirt freshman, on Friday night in Oklahoma's spring game.

Hurts completed 11 of 14 passes for 174 yards and a touchdown. He rushed for 12 yards and another score. Mordecai was 12-for-24 with 153 yards, one touchdown and one interception.

But Riley was adamant in reminding that the spring game is one of 15 spring practices.

"It was one event," Riley said. "It’s a little bit different. It’s different schematically because it’s pretty vanilla. It’s a little different because of the atmosphere. It’s good to evaluate, but it’s one of 15. We’ll go back, we’ll look at it, and we’ll get going into summer and into camp. The second we feel like we have a guy, we’ll do it."

OU opens the season Aug. 31 against Houston.
