OSU baseball weekend recap: One big day, two tough losses for Cowboys
At a school that has produced some of the most notable hitters ever in college baseball, setting another record is quite an accomplishment.
The Cowboys did it on Friday, hitting 12 home runs on the way to a 27-6 rout of Kansas. But it was an otherwise unsuccessful weekend after a pair of one-run losses.
Week record: 2-2
Overall record: 21-13 (7-5 Big 12)
The week ahead: Tuesday vs. Dallas Baptist; Thursday-Saturday vs. Texas
Going deep into the record books
Friday’s series opener at Kansas was tied at 2 when Alix Garcia hit his first of two home runs. Christian Funk followed with another, on his way to a 4-for-5 performance with three home runs, a double, five RBI and six runs scored.
Trevor Boone homered three times as well, adding a double, scoring four times and driving in six. Colin Simpson hit a grand slam in the ninth inning.
Between the second and sixth innings, OSU scored 13 runs, 12 of which were the result of home runs, sandwiching a Hueston Morrill RBI single.
Seven batters combined for the school and Big 12 record 12 homers in the game.
Another series loss
After Friday’s demoralizing loss, Kansas was 2-8 in Big 12 play, yet mustered up enough to pull out the final two games of the series and give OSU a second straight conference series loss.
The Cowboys looked to be picking up where they left off, getting homers from Funk and Simpson in Saturday’s first inning, with Simpson’s coming on the 13th pitch of the at-bat.
But Kansas rallied to take a 4-3 lead. OSU tied it in the eighth, but Kansas produced a run off Cowboy relievers Logan Gragg and Ben Leeper for the win.
Leeper suffered his first loss of the season when he was tagged for two extra-inning runs in a 7-6 defeat on Sunday.
Funk added another home run in the game, giving him five in the series and helping him earn Big 12 Player of the Week honors.
