Calexico and Iron & Wine, Big Wild and X announce upcoming OKC dates
The Tower Theatre, 425 NW 23, announced a slew of shows today to round out its summer and fall slate.
Calexico and Iron & Wine have added new shows to a previously announced tour, including a Sept. 30 stop at the Tower Theatre.
Calexico and Iron & Wine first made an artistic connection with "In the Reins," the 2005 EP that brought Sam Beam, Joey Burns and John Convertino together. The acclaimed collaboration introduced both acts to wider audiences and broadened Beam’s artistic horizons, but it was the shared experience of touring together in the tradition of Bob Dylan’s “Rolling Thunder Revue” that cemented their bond.
Their metaphorical roads diverged in the years that followed, but they kept in touch and cross-pollinated where they could. Although they often talked about rekindling their collaboration in the studio and on the stage, it wasn’t until last year that their schedules aligned. Recorded in 2018, "Years to Burn" is due out June 14 on Sub Pop Records.
Coinciding with the release of "Superdream," Big Wild has announced a 17-date 2019 headlining tour across the U.S., bringing the Superdream album experience to the stage via a new live show. Big Wild’s "Superdream Tour" is coming to the Tower Theatre on Oct. 19.
As Big Wild, producer Jackson Stell crafts lush soundscapes and sweeping melodies that challenge the status quo of electronic music. Formerly a hip-hop beat producer known as J Beatz in his native Massachusetts, Stell switched creative lanes following a life-altering trip to Big Sur, California.
In February, Big Wild released his debut album, "Superdream," on Counter Records. The new album sees Stell pushing the boundaries as a producer and artist like never before, as he serves as the primary lyricist, singer and songwriter for the first time.
As a performer, Big Wild is billed as one of the most progressive live acts on the electronic circuit today. His live show has him switching between multiple instruments (drum pads, synths, keyboards & live vocals) to deliver unique energetic performances every night.
And iconic punk group X has announced additional stops on their summer tour, including at July 1 show at the Uptown 23rd landmark.
Three decades after the inception of X, one thing is clear: X was not only one of the most influential bands to crash out of the punk movement of the late 1970s, but the band’s music continues to be groundbreaking today. Songs written during the group’s inception are as relevant and inventive today as they were in 1977.
The fact is, no one sounds like X and no one ever will. The original lineup, Exene Cervenka (vocals), John Doe (vocals/bass), Billy Zoom (guitar), and DJ Bonebrake (drums), will start touring this May. Earlier this year, X reissued and remastered their first four classic albums via their collaboration with Fat Possum Records – "Los Angeles" (1980), "Wild Gift" (1981), "Under The Big Black Sun" (1982) and "More Fun In The New World" (1983).
Tickets for all three shows go on sale Friday. Tickets can be purchased by visiting www.towertheatreokc.
