Former OU quarterback Cody Thomas, now an outfielder with the Tulsa Drillers of the Texas League, hit three home runs in a 10-7 victory over the Springfield Cardinals on Wednesday. Thomas was 4-for-4 with five runs batted in.

In 11 games this season, Thomas has five home runs and 13 RBIs. He’s batting .262.

Thomas has shown decent improvement since signing with the Dodgers. He had 19 home runs in 232 at-bats in rookie ball in 2016, 20 home runs in 460 at-bats at Class A Great Lakes in 2017 and 19 home runs in 499 at-bats last season at Class A Rancho Cucamonga.

Thomas, 24, played quarterback at OU in 2014 and 2015. He was third-team in 2015, behind Baker Mayfield and Trevor Knight, and didn’t throw a pass. But as a freshman in 2014, Thomas started three games – a 42-30 victory over Texas Tech and Patrick Mahomes; a 44-7 victory over Kansas in which tailback Semaje Perine rushed for an NCAA single-game record of 427 yards; and a 38-35 overtime loss to Oklahoma State.

For that season, Thomas completed 30 of 66 passes for 342 yards, two touchdowns and four interceptions.

In spring  2016, Thomas hit .299 with six homers and 27 RBIs for the Sooners. He had decided to transfer and continue playing football, but his baseball success enticed the Dodgers to pick him in the 13th round of the ’16 draft. He’s been on the diamond ever since.
