Students should consider walking to school

A recent article in The Oklahoman reported about students protesting climate change. If they are really interested in climate change, they should demand that all schools eliminate their fleet of school buses. Five days a week, millions of school buses hit the streets in the mornings and again in the afternoon adding tons of carbon dioxide into the climate. In addition to helping the climate, the 1- or 2-mile walk to school would be more healthful than a meatless Monday.

Eliminating the buses, we would also need to eliminate football, baseball, soccer, basketball, etc., since there are no school buses to transport the teams to competing schools, again reducing more carbon into the air. It’s a win-win situation. Students, set an example for us old-timers and start walking.

Priorities should matter with tax legislation

Tax time is a reminder that priorities matter. The 2017 tax law, which heavily favored large corporations and the wealthy, is a perfect example of putting the wrong things first. The Working Families Tax Relief Act does it right. It would significantly boost income for working families by expanding the earned income tax credit and child tax credit, and give families an additional tax credit for raising young children. This bill would benefit 44 million families and lift 11 million children above the poverty line.

It's time we fixed our tax laws to give working people and children a fair shot to get ahead. Congress should make expanding the EITC and CTC a priority in any upcoming tax legislation.

Reserve judgment on handicapped parking

While I understand how one could get frustrated with what appears to be a healthy person using handicapped parking, remember that there are conditions, such as a heart problem, that qualify for getting the parking placard. Years ago, I had a neighbor who looked like Superman. I resented his using a handicap placard; he died at 52.

Don’t judge a book by its cover. Before you call the police for someone you think is not handicapped, you should know that not all people look handicapped!
