Woman, child killed after being struck by pickup in police pursuit Friday

A woman and a child were killed Friday afternoon after the vehicle they were in was struck by a man driving a stolen pickup and fleeing from police.

About 5:40 p.m. Friday, an officer attempted to stop the pickup for a traffic violation near SW 40 and Villa Avenue. The driver fled south on Villa Avenue and ran a stop sign at SW 44. The pickup collided with a sport utility vehicle with three people inside, said Sgt. Travis Vernier.

The SUV was pushed into the front yard of a home and the pickup continued down the street a short distance before the driver lost control. Vernier said the pursuit only lasted about 20 seconds.

A woman and child that were inside the SUV were pronounced dead at the scene. A third occupant of the SUV was taken to a local hospital in serious condition. The driver of the pickup and a woman, a passenger in the vehicle, were taken to a hospital in serious condition, Vernier said.

The names of those involved in the collision were not released.

Officers later confirmed that the pickup had been reported stolen and a during a search of the vehicle, officers reported finding guns and drugs.

Members of the Oklahoma City Fire Department's Hazardous Materials Response Team were called out to the scene after police suspected some of the drugs might be fentanyl.
