OKC Thunder report card: Game 3 energy was high from Thunder, The Peake

The Thunder faced a must-win situation in Game 3. Never before has an NBA team come back from a 3-0 deficit to win a playoff series. The grades reflect the energy not only in the Thunder but also at The Peake during Oklahoma City's 120-108 win.

Dominating the paint

B. The Thunder did a better job exploiting its advantages in the paint. By halftime, Steven Adams had 10 points while OKC had a 22-12 advantage in points-in-the-paint scoring. But despite that, it would’ve been nice to see Adams get a few more looks. He got only five shots, hitting four of them. Find two or three more shots each half for Adams, and that might really start to exploit the advantage that the Thunder should have against the Blazers.

Fan shooting

A. Unlike the Thunder, its fans can shoot from deep. On Friday, two fans got 24 seconds to attempt as many half-court shots as possible to win $20,000 from MidFirst Bank — and both did. First came Derek Williamson in the first quarter. On his last shot, he splashed one. Pressure shooting for sure. In the second quarter, Jesse Norman didn’t need near as much time. He made his fourth attempt. Maybe the Thunder could find a few 10-day contracts for Williamson and Norman and their outside shooting.

Valuing possessions

C. Too many careless turnovers. Coming out of a second-quarter timeout, for example, Portland committed a turnover, but in transition, OKC gave it right back. With the Thunder’s outside shooting struggles, it can’t give away possessions without even attempting a shot. Of the Thunder’s 10 first-half turnovers, eight came on possessions that did not result in a shot. The Thunder must value possessions better than that.

Fan T-shirts

A. The Thunder went orange for the T-shirts given to every fan at The Peake — and it was awesome. For years, the Thunder has seemed concerned about using orange — the franchise even refers to it as “sunset” — because it’s got a strong connection to one side of the Bedlam rivalry. The initial orange jerseys worn by the team as alternates were actually phased out at one point even though they looked amazing. The orange jerseys came back thankfully, and Friday, the entire arena was orange. Great call, Thunder.

Bench production

A. The Thunder reserves have been solid throughout this series, and they were again Friday night. Dennis Schroder hit a couple 3-points before halftime. Markieff Morris gave quality minutes, at one point prompting Thunder coach Billy Donovan to pull Jerami Grant back from the scorers’ table to give Morris a bit more time. Remember when the Thunder reserves were a huge liability in the playoffs? No more.

National anthem

A. The Thunder knows how to find great talent to do the national anthem in the playoffs, and Friday was no exception. Harrah native Brennin Hunt did an acapella version that was spot on. A little country. A little rock. Excellent. If you don’t know Hunt, he starred as Roger in Fox’s live version of “Rent.”

Flippin’ kiddin’ me?

F. To the young man who flipped off the in-house camera when you were on the jumbotron — really? Not sure if you were trying to show off or be a hero to your buddies, but just don’t. You look like a doofus.

Honoring lives lost

A. Friday was the 24th anniversary of the bombing of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building, and the Thunder has a long-standing connection to the memorial. One of the first things the franchise does is have new employees, players and coaches included, go to the museum and memorial. So it was no surprise Friday included some subtle but strong reminders of the anniversary. Thunder personnel, including the TV broadcast crew, wore commemorative pins. Then during the pregame prayer, James Dunbar mentioned the lives lost. Nice touches.
