Russell Westbrook makes good on his promise, leads Thunder to victory in Game 3

Russell Westbrook didn’t just rock the baby. He swung the imaginary bundle of joy from the height of one shoulder to the other.

The crowd roared too loudly for anyone outside of a two-foot radius to hear him, but he mouthed the words slowly enough to make the sentiment clear.

“Too small,” he appeared to yell.

He was talking about Portland guard Damian Lillard, whom he had just hit a fadeaway jump shot over.

Back in his postgame press conference after Game 2, Westbrook made a promise. He would be better. He would make sure his team had a chance to win a game. In a 120-108 win Friday, Westbrook made good on that promise. The Thunder claimed its first win of the first-round playoff series, cutting the Trail Blazers’ lead two games to one.

“Man of his words,” Thunder forward Paul George said. “He came out, he led, we got behind him, and he put us on his back.”

No team in NBA history has won a best-of-seven series after falling behind 0-3. With a win in OKC’s first home game of the postseason, it avoided that fate.

Westbrook scored 33 points on 22 shots. While his own shooting improved in Game 3, his ball distribution and commitment to getting the ball to even his teammates whose shots had been missing the most this series, made the biggest difference.

Jerami Grant hadn’t made a 3-point shot all series heading into play Friday. He had missed eight attempts. But with the Thunder’s first possession Friday, Westbrook found Grant in the corner for a catch-and-shoot 3-pointer. He made the shot.

“It was huge,” said Grant, who finished the night with 18 points. “Russ knows exactly what he’s doing, whether it’s giving me confidence early in the game or just finding me. Russ does a great job of just controlling the tempo, controlling the team, and he did a great job tonight.”

Westbrook facilitated the ball movement that led to the Thunder making five of its first eight 3-point attempts, with a different player sinking each.

He took advantage of turnovers, which the Thunder brought back into its defensive game.

In the last three and a half minutes of the second quarter, Portland guard CJ McCollum tried to split two Thunder defenders, but he lost his dribble and his footing as he tried to do so. Thunder guard Dennis Schroder scooped up the loose ball and sprinted down the court, hitting Westbrook in stride. With a quick catch-and-lob, Westbrook teed up Markieff Morris for an alley-oop.

Morris went sliding into the baseline seats, and fans throughout Chesapeake Energy Arena jumped to their feet screaming. It was a rare basket in a second quarter in which the Thunder and Trail Blazers combined for 45 points, and it gave the Thunder a five-point lead.

In the third quarter, Lillard rose to the challenge. He said he didn’t see Westbrook rock the baby on him. He was responding to the deficit.

“We just wanted to keep it a close game, make them work for everything,” he said.

Lillard scored 25 points in the third period alone. The Thunder had led by as many as 16 points, but with Lillard sinking momentum-slowing shots, the Blazers cut the Thunder’s lead to just four points heading into the fourth quarter.

Portland even briefly tied it up in the final period. But four minutes in, Westbrook split two Blazers defenders with a backdoor pass, and Grant threw down a dunk that gave the Thunder a 99-92 lead. That prompted Portland coach Terry Stotts to call a timeout.

OKC remained ahead for the rest of the game, and with 3:10 to go, Westbrook rocked the baby again. This time, he did so more subtly, and OKC locked down on defense. This time, Lillard didn’t have the chance to respond.
