Paul George's dunk after buzzer caps chippy Game 3, but Trail Blazers say it 'wasn't anything'

Anfernee Simons was supposed to run out the clock. The Thunder was up 12 with seconds remaining and Simons was still attacking. Nerlens Noel was having none of it.

So, Noel swatted his shot. Raymond Felton picked up the loose ball and fired ahead to Paul George for a dunk on the break. It was defiant, a reverse double pump that some of the Blazers took exception to after the Thunder’s 120-108 win, even if they tried not to admit it.

“It wasn’t anything,” said Blazers forward Evan Turner, who was one of several players including Raymond Felton and Dennis Schroder at center court after the buzzer. Turner said he was trying to talk to Felton, who is his friend. “I think people coming around made it 10 times worse.

“So, when they did that (dunk), it’s like, ‘Oh, so that’s what y’all are doing?’ At the same time, we beat them and it’s the same thing. I still slap people on the butt and shook their hands. I’ve never had any different type of energy.”

The dunk didn’t even count, waved off after the buzzer, but it served as a punctuation at Chesapeake Energy Arena. Back was the swaggering bunch that combines defensive tenacity with attitude bordering on arrogance.

“I think they were trying to come out and play physical, muck the game up, especially when you’ve got two guards that are doing what they’re (C.J. McCollum and Damian Lillard) doing,” Turner said.

It’s a delicate balance, as seen by McCollum and Lillard teeing off for 33 points on 14 shots in the fourth quarter. After Russell Westbrook scored on Lillard and did his “rock the baby” celebration, Lillard lit up the Thunder for 25 points in a little more than nine minutes.

The first round of the playoffs has seen a few instances of players “poking the bear,” only to have fire rained down upon them. Brooklyn’s Jared Dudley said Philadelphia’s Ben Simmons was an “average” halfcourt player before Game 3 and Simmons torched the Nets for 31 points. Clippers guard Patrick Beverley tried to antagonize Golden State’s Kevin Durant and Durant dropped 38 points in 29 minutes.

It’s dangerous territory to tread into with All-Stars. Good thing the Thunder was up to the challenge, locking down Lillard and McCollum for nine points on 2-of-10 shooting in the fourth quarter.

“Whatever he does that got him here, he’s got to keep doing that,” Schroder said of Westbrook. “For me, for Russ, for some people, you’ve just got to get into the game, you’ve got to be charged up a little bit.

“Sometimes talking trash when somebody talks to you, you’ve got to talk back to get that intensity. The same with me. I do the same thing and that’s where I get my energy.”

The key was the Thunder didn’t just use that energy on offense. Thunder coach Billy Donovan closed the game with Schroder, him and Westbrook defending Lillard. George drew McCollum, an assignment which belonged to Terrance Ferguson in Games 1 and 2.

“I thought Dennis did a great job tonight,” Donovan said. “On defense, he was physical, aggressive and really worked hard.”

Schroder was part of a Thunder which forced 14 turnovers in the first half.

“They were desperate,” McCollum said. “They knew what was at stake going down 3-0. They needed to get a win and they got one.”
