Two fans hit $20,000 half-court shots at Thunder game

Derek Williamson closed his eyes and heaved his half-court shot into the air.

By the time he looked up, the basketball swished through the net as a buzzer sounded. The crowd at Chesapeake Energy Arena roared at the last-second shot, as loud as for any Oklahoma City Thunder player Friday evening.

“I was like, ‘Oh, I’m running out of time,’ so it’s the last shot, and I just threw it up,” he said. “I saw it go in, and I really couldn’t believe it. I didn’t think it would go in.”

Thunder staff mobbed Williamson, crowning him the winner of $20,000.

He was the first fan to hit a half-court shot at a Thunder game since April 12, 2017. But, his victory was only the first of the evening Friday.

A second fan, Jesse Norman, also hit from half court a quarter later during the Thunder’s playoff game with the Portland Trailblazers.

During the Thunder’s best offensive performance of the playoff series, 48.1% shooting and 51.7% from 3, the sharpest shooters happened to come from the stands.

Both fan contestants had 24 seconds to make a half-court bucket for the $20,000 prize from MidFirst Bank. The bank has sponsored the half-court competition at every Thunder home game since the 2008 inaugural season of the franchise. Williamson and Norman became the 12th and 13th winners, respectively.

Williamson, 24, of Midwest City, launched nine shots over 24 seconds with relative accuracy. Many of them came tantalizingly close to falling in the basket before he aced his final one at the buzzer.

“I kept missing, and I kept hitting the rim,” he said. “I don’t even think I opened my eyes the last shot.”

Williamson said he plans to use his winnings on an engagement ring for his girlfriend, who he’s been dating for more than a year. He announced to the arena before making his shot that he hoped to propose and take her and his 4-year-old son on a vacation.

In an interview after the competition, Williamson said he intends to take the family on a trip to Miami and give his son on an unlimited shopping trip.

“I can’t wait to take my son shopping and to go on vacation, take him wherever he wants to go because that’s the most important thing in my life,” Williamson said. “The second most important thing is my girlfriend.

“I want to give her everything, and this 20-grand’s going to help.”

Norman, 36, of Prague, said he wants to spend his $20,000 on a trip to Disneyworld with his two sons, age 9 and 15.

Norman needed only five shots to strike gold. He said he used the same half-court strategy that he’s been teaching his 9-year-old son for youth basketball games.

“I put the weight in it,” he said. “Just put my weight behind it from the hip.”’

Norman believed he had a chance to make a half-court basket – or at least get close.

“I knew I had a shot,” he said in an interview in a tunnel leading to the court. “I just jumped and screamed. Then I came back here, and it started to sink in. I’ve got $20,000.”

Norman and Williamson qualified to shoot for the prize after winning a free-throw competition the weekend before. Williamson said his girlfriend convinced him to join the contest, which won him tickets to his first Thunder game in four years.

“I’m just amazed I’m here,” he said. “It’s a beautiful moment. I’m just blessed beyond belief.”
