Woman, child killed after being struck by pickup in police pursuit Friday
A woman and a child were killed Friday afternoon after the vehicle they were in was struck by a man driving a stolen pickup and fleeing from police.
About 5:40 p.m. Friday, an officer attempted to stop the pickup for a traffic violation near SW 40 and Villa Avenue. The driver fled south on Villa Avenue and ran a stop sign at SW 44. The pickup collided with a sport utility vehicle with three people inside, said Sgt. Travis Vernier.
The SUV was pushed into the front yard of a home and the pickup continued down the street a short distance before the driver lost control. Vernier said the pursuit only lasted about 20 seconds.
A woman and child who were inside the SUV were pronounced dead at the scene. A third occupant of the SUV was taken to a local hospital in serious condition. The driver of the pickup and a woman, a passenger, were taken to a hospital in serious condition, Vernier said.
The names of those involved in the collision were not released.
Officers later confirmed that the pickup had been reported stolen and a during a search of the vehicle, officers reported finding guns and drugs.
