Thunder makes the extra pass in Game 3 against the Blazers

In Games 1 and 2 in Portland, Paul George combined for three assists.

Who makes shots on the end of George’s passes is out of his control. What is under his control is finding players for shots when he faces double teams or his path is cut off on drives.

Or making that extra pass when he’s struggling from the field like Friday’s 120-108 win against Portland in Game 3.

George was 3-of-16 from the field, but had more assists on Friday (six) than Games 1 and 2 combined. He was part of a Thunder contingent which all sought the extra pass – bypassing a good shot for a better shot – en route to 27 assists on 37 made baskets.

“We had three baskets on where he threw the ball into Nerlens and Steven in the middle of the floor and those guys made the next play,” Thunder coach Billy Donovan said of George logging “hockey assists,” as the player making the pass to the player who logs the assist. “Terrance made a three and Nerlens made a jumper in the lane. Nerlens made a nice pocket pass to Markieff on the baseline.

“When he’s playmaking, that’s good.”

Russell Westbrook was able to translate his playmaking into double-digit assists in Games 1 and 2 in spite of the Thunder’s poor shooting. The Thunder’s ball movement of Game 1 reappeared with more consistency in Game 3 through more than just Westbrook (11 assists), as George and Dennis Schroder (six assists each) also created for teammates.

When George faced the Blazers this season, he wasn’t just scoring, but playmaking to the tune of 5.5 assists per game in four regular-season contests against them. George’s playmaking (and a ton of free throws – 17 attempts) can help offset even the worst shooting nights.

Whether it's from George or Westbrook or Schroder, that extra pass can open up a defense. In the first quarter Friday, Westbrook and Schroder each passed up 3-pointers to get George a corner 3 with Steven Adams providing a killer screen.

“Knowing how successful I was scoring the ball against this team, that can’t be my mindset going in each game, that I got to just score,” George said. “I got to let the game come to me. That’s what I’ve been so great at this season is letting the game come to me, knowing when to attack, knowing when to set up guys. Just play the game, get lost in the game, let the game dictate who shoots it, where the shots are coming from. And I’ll live with it.”
