Thunder journal: CJ McCollum carries Blazers to win with huge fourth quarter

Paul George lost the ball on his way up to the basket as Portland guard CJ McCollum knocked it out of his hands.

McCollum was off, tearing past Thunder forward Jerami Grant down the sideline and pulling up at the top of the arc. He drained the 3-point shot to give the Trail Blazers a comfortable lead in the fourth quarter of Game 4.

The Thunder watched McCollum score 13 points in the fourth quarter of a game OKC lost 111-98 Sunday. McCollum has been a tough cover all series — a series Portland leads 3-1 — but when the Thunder had to scramble back into transition defense, he became that much harder to stop.

The Trail Blazers outscored the Thunder on the fast break 20-17. Each team made seven shots, but Portland capitalized on McCollum’s ability to shoot transition 3-pointers.

McCollum said getting in good enough shape to “hit big 3s off the dribble” was one of the things he focused on after getting swept in the first round of the NBA playoffs last season.

“I approached it the same way as I always do: as a challenge,” he said of the first-round upset.

McCollum proved Sunday that he had maintained the ability to drain momentum-swinging 3-pointers off the dribble, even after a left knee injury sidelined him for 10 games in the last month of the regular season.

“I was on the phone with him a lot,” Portland point guard Damian Lillard said, “so I know he was doing three and four training sessions, and when it was time to get back on the court he was pushing as hard as he could.”

Felton fuel

In the first half of Game 4 Sunday, Thunder guard Raymond Felton scored eight points in 11 minutes on the floor. His pull-up jumper three and a half minutes into the second quarter gave the Thunder a 33-28 lead soon after George headed to the bench with three fouls.

“I think Ray being a veteran guy, a ball-handling guy, it allows him at times with our second unit to kind of settle them down a little bit,” Thunder coach Billy Donovan said before the game. “It helps us at times to create or put Dennis (Schroder) in situations where he can be aggressive and score, and he can help organize the floor a little bit. I think just his IQ, his understanding those things have been really helpful to our team.”

Felton saw an increase in first-half minutes as George remained on the bench for the last nine minutes of the second quarter. Felton’s early scoring helped soften the blow of George’s foul trouble at first, but the Trail Blazers closed the first half on an 11-0 run. Felton didn’t score in the second half.

Key statistic

The Thunder shot the exact same percentage from 2-point range as from beyond the arc: 37.5. OKC made just three more 2-point shots (18) than 3-point shots (15).

“We did not finish around the basket very well tonight,” Donovan said. “I thought we had a lot of stuff in around the rim, and I thought obviously that was a big factor in the game, our ability to cash in on some plays around the basket.”
