Thunder journal: OKC switches up Jerami Grant's role in Game 5 loss

Until Tuesday, this particular matchup had just been something the Thunder went to sparingly, to try to throw the Trail Blazers off with a different look. But in Game 5, Thunder forward Jerami Grant started guarding Portland center Enes Kanter in the first quarter.

It was the same move that the Thunder made in Game 3, after Blazers guard Damian Lillard went on a scoring spree in the third quarter. Grant guarding the Portland center allowed the Thunder to switch in pick-and-roll coverage.

Switch it did on Tuesday, in a 118-115 loss that ended the Thunder's short-lived playoff run. But, unlike the fourth quarter in Game 3, OKC didn’t put an emphasis on trapping Lillard. The results were much different.

OKC limited the players around Lillard on Tuesday. Sharp-shooter CJ McCollum picked up three fouls in the first quarter. Lillard scored 19 of the Trail Blazers’ 29 points in the opening period.

The Thunder went small to start the fourth quarter, with Grant playing center, surrounded by three guards and small forward Paul George. OKC coach Billy Donovan did the same thing in Game 4, after the Thunder fell behind the Blazers.

“I thought putting Jerami at the five stretched the floor a little bit,” Donovan said of that adjustment, “and gave us another good roller because Steven (Adams) is such a great roller to the basket and Jerami can do the same thing. It gave us the flexibility to trap McCollum and Lillard a little bit more.”

On the offensive end Tuesday, Grant made his first seven shots and finished the night shooting 7-of-8.

Banged up

Laying on his left side, Thunder guard Dennis Schroder curled up as he slid into the base of the hoop, and 6-foot-9, 220-pound Maurice Harkless fell on top of him.

Schroder’s teammates gathered around him as he lay on the floor, clutching his side, with three minutes left in the first half. He got up slowly, took his free throws and remained in the game.

Kanter didn’t bounce back as smoothly. The Portland center grabbed his left shoulder after he was fouled by the Thunder's George four minutes into the second quarter. Kanter appeared to limit the movement of his left shoulder after that.

Then in the last seven seconds of the first half, Kanter drew a foul under the basket, falling to the ground to sell it. He was slow to get up, again clutching his left shoulder. Kanter headed straight to the tunnel after taking his free throws, but he returned to play in the second half.

Reset instead of revamp?

A year ago, Portland coach Terry Stotts was in the midst of an embarrassing 4-0 sweep in the first round of the playoffs against New Orleans.

Portland general manager Neil Olshey and late owner Paul Allen didn’t change the team at its core, even as the talk around "blowing it up" became loud.

The Thunder could face similarly difficult decisions this offseason, from the futures of general manager Sam Presti and Donovan, to trading key players.

"You have to make some tough decisions one way or the other," Stotts said. "I think one of the things about Neil and Paul was recognizing not to overact to one thing. I’m glad that the decisions that were made were made.”
