OU softball weekend recap: Sooners sweep Texas to stay No. 1
Oklahoma softball is one victory shy of stringing together the longest winning streak in program history.
The Sooners punctuated a three-game sweep of Texas with a 9-2 win Saturday in Austin. It was their 31st consecutive win, tying the record winning streak from 2016.
Weekend record: 3-0
Overall record: 41-2 (12-0 Big 12)
Grace Lyons knew there was a chance to make a spectacular catch, but it was going to be close. Texas pinch hitter MK Tedder hit a soft pop up between the pitching circle and second base, and Lyons came charging in from shortstop.
“That’s just an awkward spot,” Lyons said. “It’s like no man’s land in the middle. Off the bat I kind of knew it was an inside pitch, so she could’ve gotten jammed. Right when I saw it in the air I went for it. Luckily I got my glove under.”
She sprawled out to record the final out in OU’s 3-1 win Thursday. Her teammates sprinted toward her to celebrate.
“The whole series was a postseason atmosphere,” Lyons said.
The play earned the No. 1 spot on SportsCenter’s Top 10.
Oklahoma left-hander Giselle Juarez was named Big 12 Pitcher of the Week on Tuesday for the second consecutive week and the fourth time this season.
Juarez picked up two wins against Texas, allowing two earned runs in 11 innings. She struck out 12 while walking one.
The junior transfer from Arizona State is 18-0 with a 1.49 ERA.
OU remained No. 1 in the ESPN.com/USA Softball poll. Texas, Oklahoma State and Texas Tech are all ranked in the top-25.
The Sooners rose to No. 1 in the RPI for the first time this season. UCLA, Arizona, Washington and Texas round out the top-5.
The Sooners will play four more road games this week beginning at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Wichita State.
OU will then head to Iowa State for a three-game weekend series. The Sooners and Cyclones will meet at 4 p.m. Friday, 1 p.m. Saturday and noon Sunday.
