Where he wanted to be all along: Sooners' Cody Ford picked by Bills in second round

Cody Ford’s moment was delayed.

Not only as he slipped into early in the second round in the NFL Draft, but as the former Oklahoma offensive lineman’s walk across the stage was delayed after he was picked.

But now, Ford is content after being picked No. 38 overall by the Buffalo Bills in the second round Friday.

When he was finally introduced in Nashville, about 40 minutes after being picked, Ford said Buffalo was his preferred destination all along.

“The O-line coach, coach Bobby Johnson, I feel like we hit it off as soon as we met at Pro Day,” Ford said on the NFL Network. “I want to see this organization make big noise this season and let’s see if we can go win one.”

Ford was at the draft Thursday as he watched teammates Kyler Murray and Marquise Brown picked in the first round but didn’t hear his name called.

Friday, instead of hanging out in the green room backstage at the draft waiting on the call, Ford stayed at his nearby hotel, coming over after his pick and without the flashy red jacket he wore the night before.

He is the first of an expected four Sooners offensive linemen picked in the draft. Bobby Evans, Ben Powers and Dru Samia are expected to join Ford.

“I grew up as an only child,” Ford said at OU’s Pro Day in March. “As soon as I got here, Ben, Bobby and Dru, we were all in the same class. Those are my brothers for life. I’d do anything for them, and I know they’d do anything for me.”

Ford is the highest-drafted Oklahoma offensive lineman since Lane Johnson was taken No. 4 overall in 2013.

“He’s one of the nastiest offensive linemen I’ve ever coached, and I think he was probably the most dominant tackle in the country last year,” Sooners coach Lincoln Riley said in a statement. “Seeing him now as a high draft pick is amazing. His best ball is in front of him.”

The Bills traded up to take Ford, moving up two spots by sending the No. 40 pick and No. 158 (fifth-round selection) to the Oakland Raiders to take Ford.

His versatility made Ford attractive in the NFL, as he played both guard and tackle for the Sooners. He started all 14 games last season at right tackle.

He was named All-Big 12 first-team by the league’s coaches and was a third-team Associated Press All-American.

Ford is the first Sooners player picked by the Bills since Nic Harris in the 2009 fifth round.
