NFL Draft journal: Sooners have four linemen drafted in first four rounds, Cowboys have two players picked

When Ben Powers went off the board with the No. 123 overall pick to the Baltimore Ravens in Saturday’s fourth round of the NFL Draft, Oklahoma hit a prestigious mark.

It’s the sixth time since the draft went down to seven rounds in 1994 that a team has had four offensive linemen selected.

But it’s the first time in that period that a program has had four linemen picked in the first four rounds.

Earlier in the fourth round, Dru Samia was taken with the No. 114 pick by the Minnesota Vikings.

Powers and Samia joined Cody Ford (No. 38 overall to the Buffalo Bills) and Bobby Evans (No. 97 overall to the Los Angeles Rams) in the draft.

The only member of Oklahoma’s Joe Moore Award-winning offensive line that wasn’t selected was center Creed Humphrey, who isn’t eligible until next year. Humphrey is considered a first-round candidate in the 2020 draft if he leaves early.

Hill first of two Cowboys picked

After watching a string of running backs go off the board in the middle of the third round Friday night, Oklahoma State’s Justice Hill finally heard his name called Saturday morning.

The Baltimore Ravens picked Hill with the 11th selection of the fourth round, No. 113 overall.

Hill, who entered the NFL Draft after his true junior season, battled injuries late last year and did not play in OSU’s final three games, but rushed for 930 yards on 158 carries, averaging 5.9 yards per carry with nine touchdowns.

He impressed scouts with his brief but impactful showing at the NFL Combine. He ran the fastest 40-yard dash among running backs at 4.40 seconds.

“They’re building a track team in Baltimore,” one NFL Network analyst joked after the selection, referencing Hill joining speedy former Oklahoma receiver Marquise Brown among the Ravens’ selections in the draft.

Seibert first OU kicker drafted in 40 years

Oklahoma kicker Austin Seibert kicked plenty of extra points after touchdown drives engineered by Baker Mayfield.

Now, he'll have a chance to do the same in the NFL.

Seibert was the No. 170 overall pick in the fifth round Saturday by the Cleveland Browns, becoming the first Sooners kicker taken since Uwe von Schamann in the 1979 seventh round.

Seibert served as both the Sooners kicker and punter during all four of his years in Oklahoma.

He became the NCAA career-leader in points for an FBS kicker with 499, also setting both Big 12 and school records for scoring by any player.

The Illinois native made 79.7 percent of his kicks during his career, with a long of 51. He made 310 of 315 extra points, including a school-record 162 consecutive.

He also averaged 41.7 yards per punt, but chose to focus on placekicking in the lead-up to the draft.

Seibert is the fourth Sooners kicker to be drafted.

Anderson to team with Mixon

Rodney Anderson, on his road back from a third season-ending injury, has been rewarded.

The Oklahoma running back was selected with the No. 211 overall pick in the sixth round by the Cincinnati Bengals on Saturday in the NFL draft.

In Cincinnati, Anderson will be teamed up with another former OU running back — Joe Mixon.

Anderson suffered a season-ending knee injury last September against UCLA. It was the third season-ending injury of his OU career.

“He's easily one of the best talents in this draft and I'm thrilled that he was able to be picked,” Sooners coach Lincoln Riley said in a statement. “He's going to be able to prove to the Bengals that they made a great decision. He's a tremendous player and an incredibly dedicated player, and you just really have to appreciate the journey he's been on. I'm so happy for him."

Brailford goes to Washington

Oklahoma State defensive end/linebacker Jordan Brailford knew it was time to move on with his career after a stellar junior season, and the gamble paid off.

The 6-foot-3, 252-pound Brailford was selected by the Washington Redskins with the No. 253 overall pick in the seventh round on Saturday. Brailford was the next-to-last player selected.

Brailford led OSU with 9.0 sacks and 16.0 tackles for loss, both of which ranked in the top 25 nationally. He had 54 tackles and seven quarterback hurries.

His versatility began to show its value over the course of the season and into the offseason, showing his ability to play as a traditional defensive end or a stand-up edge rusher.

Five state products drafted

Utah State running back Darwin Thompson, a Jenks alum, was taken by the Kansas City Chiefs with the final pick of the sixth round.

Thompson was the fourth of five state products drafted, joining Tulsa McLain’s Josh Jacobs (first round, Raiders), Kingfisher’s Jace Sternberger (third round, Packers) and Tulsa Booker T. Washington’s Hill (fourth round, Ravens) and Brailford (seventh round, Redskins).
