HUGO -- Three children were injured by gunfire Friday when police officers opened fire during an arrest of an armed robbery suspect, the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation reported.

Two Hugo police detectives opened fire during an arrest of William Devaughn Smith, 21, who was located in Hugo Friday afternoon. Smith was wanted in connection with the armed robbery of a Pizza Hut in Hugo on April 11.

The two Hugo detectives found Smith while he was parked at a grocery store at 400 West Bissell in Hugo. Shots were fired, and Smith was wounded and taken to a hospital in Paris, Texas, OSBI reported. Three children, ages, 5, 4 and 1, were taken to a Tulsa hospital where they were treated for non life-threatening injuries. Another child in the vehicle was not injured.

The two Hugo detectives are on paid leave pending an outcome of the investigation, OSBI reported.
