IT company hopes to keep tech jobs in OKC

Information technology company Rural Sourcing Inc. is aggressively hiring 90 technology workers for its new office space in Bricktown, the Rock Island Plow Building.

Tech workers might feel pressure to cluster in cities like San Francisco, Austin, Denver or other places where information technology jobs are in high demand. Rural Sourcing's business model offers serious IT work so locals don't feel the pressure to choose between a job and home, CEO Monty Hamilton said.

"Fundamentally, we believe that everyone in the U.S., regardless of race, gender, socioeconomic background or even geographic location should have the opportunity and the access to a career in technology," Hamilton said at a ribbon-cutting event Wednesday. "Consequently, we believe that no one should ever have to make a trade-off between living in a location that you love and pursuing a vocation that you dream of."

Also on Wednesday, Gov. Kevin Stitt praised Rural Sourcing for a "unique and much-needed business plan."

Rural Sourcing launched a decade ago in Arkansas. With the addition of its Oklahoma City office, the company now has six sites in mid-size metropolitan areas across the country that employ web developers, program managers and others in the tech field.

"Our dream, even back then, was to create thousands of technology careers in places where they didn't already exist. With the help of Oklahoma City, we're over 500 folks now in six different locations, so with your help, we're well on our way to making that dream a reality," Hamilton said.

The company provides contract services to companies that need IT services and development, including those in the insurance, health care and manufacturing sectors, Hamilton said.

For its expansion to Oklahoma, the company leased 20,000 square feet of space on the first and second floors of the Rock Island Plow Building at 29 E Reno Avenue. The brick building sat virtually abandoned for decades and had to undergo significant renovations to keep it from collapsing.

The IT professionals at Rural Sourcing will work under the building's tall ceilings and heavy timber supports, and within its exposed brick walls. The building's design evokes the nostalgia of its earlier use, a warehouse where farm plows were sold.

"We fell in love with it when we walked in the door. It had everything we were looking for. All of our buildings are on the National Historic Register, and so we look for these buildings that have a lot of character to them," Hamilton said.
